Our Story

For more than ten years, I dreamed about owning a yarn shop. I imagined yarn and books, yarn and coffee—even yarn and wine! But nothing quite clicked until I thought, What if the yarn shop could travel?

A shop on wheels would let me bring beautiful yarn to communities that didn’t have a local yarn store of their own. I talked about the idea for a long time until a friend finally told me, “Stop talking about it and do it!” So I did.

In May 2019, I found the mobility bus that would become Purl. On the drive to my dad’s in South Georgia, I decided she needed a name. Purl just seemed to fit—of course, spelled like the knitting stitch.

I had planned to build her out myself, with lots of phone calls to Dad for advice. Eventually he said, “I’ll do it, but you’ll have to leave her here for a while.” Three months later, with cubbies for yarn, pegboard from end to end, and a clever little folding table, my dad had transformed her into my yarn shop on wheels.

Purl hit the road in September 2019, and what began as a yarn shop on wheels quickly became something much bigger. Along the way, I’ve met an incredible community of knitters, crocheters, dyers, designers, and fiber friends who have made this journey more special than I ever imagined.

Today, I fill Purl—and our online shop—with beautiful yarns from independent dyers across the U.S., along with projects and treasures chosen to inspire your creativity. Whether you meet us at an event, step aboard Purl, or shop with us online, I want you to feel like you’ve found your yarn shop and your fiber community.

Purl has developed a personality all her own—our fiber friends even ask for her by name—and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I hope you’ll follow along with our adventures, come find us on the road, and know that wherever you meet The Traveling Yarn Yogi, you’re always welcome.
